What is the Cupola?
• The Cupola is a seven-window observation module on the International Space Station (ISS). It functions as the “window to space”, offering astronauts a panoramic view of Earth and space.
• Installed: February 2010
• Location: Tranquility Module (Node 3) of the ISS
• Shape: Dome-like hexagonal structure with one central circular window and six surrounding trapezoidal ones
Purpose and Functions
• Earth Observation: Enables stunning views of Earth for photography, weather observation, and outreach.
• Spacecraft Monitoring: Helps astronauts visually track spacecraft during docking/undocking.
• Robotic Operations: Offers direct visual
support for using the ISS’s robotic arm(Canadarm2).
• Psychological Relief: Astronauts report it improves mental well-being during long missions.

• Window Shields: Each window has a protective shutter to shield it from micrometeoroids and space debris.
• Material: Made from aluminium and glass, built to withstand the extreme space environment.
• Size: Roughly 1.5 m in diameter and 1.5 m high.
